Life during the 10 year Trojan war

While going through Iliad by Homer, I was very disturbed to read how the prisoners of war and their families are treated. While the male prisoners are imprisoned or executed, their wives are ill treated and in most cases become slaves of their captors. The kids, though not mentioned, will in all probability be taken care by their close relatives.

War between the city states seems was the only way how difference of opinion, disputes and other legal matters were resolved. 3200 years back, the collective thinking for societal benefit had not evolved. Heroism and valour were the male qualities that were respected.

How fortunate we are to have a structured societal system where law, peace, welfare, equality, societal development are given more stress by establishment of legal system, courts etc.
