How can AI immediately help business ..

Having read lots about the benefits of AI and how AI would transform humanity, I was very inquisitive to know in spite of all the hype around AI, have we started using AI in a big way.

In 2018, I was attending a one day program on AI at the Indian Institute of Management , Bangalore which had an afternoon session with IBM engineers. Towards the end of their demo, I asked the engineers what were the actual applications of AI by IBM in the present day world, at least in India. The engineer was frank enough and admitted that it was just chatbot applications.

While going through the paper AI for the real world by Prof. Davenport and Ronanki in Feb '18, HBR, I was able to understand what were the business benefits of AI and in general what were the AI challenges that global organisations face.

Why are organistions sceptical ,of implementing AI when there are so much hype around it is a question that would naturally come to any manager or engineer working in the industry.

An anagram IEPPIO is apt for this occasion as per primary research conducted by the HBR paper authors on 250 executives in 152 AI projects, gve the real challenge faced by AI in the real world.

I - ntegration

E - xpensive

P - oor understanding

P - eople

I - nnovative technology and

O - verhyped technologies

The world is yet to fully understand the cognitive ability of humans, how humans distinguish one decision from another and in spite of the best intentions, fails completely in this area.

Of course, the technologie are too expensive, which takes it out of the realm of ordinary startups and medium sized organisations.

We are yet to fully understand the nuances of AI and its applications

We do not yet have the real human resources to support full deployment of AI acropss organisations

Even though we extrapolate saying what all the technologies can do, we have immaturely developed technologies, ie. over huping it.

The overhype or over selling of the technology has created a sort of glass palaces in the minds of the public and they expect AI to change the world radically overnight, which is not possible.

Once we know the challenges faced by AI, it makes sense to understand how we can overcome it.

Understanding the Business benefits of AI

AI behind Google translate ..

The Google translate app is a great AI app .. I gave the following sentence in English to check how it translates, if it was a normal translator, it would have translated word by word, but the AI component in it tells us how it has rearranged the words in the sentence to ensure the correct expression with the correct meaning.,

Test sentence : The meaning of the sentence does not change when translated.

Hindi language - अनुवाद किए जाने पर वाक्य का अर्थ नहीं बदलता है।

Malayalam language - വിവർത്തനം ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ വാക്യത്തിന്റെ അർത്ഥം മാറില്ല.

Marathi language - भाषांतरित असताना वाक्याचा अर्थ बदलत नाही.

The translation is exact and clean.

How does Google achieve this ? Machine Learning ?

Types of AI

Artificial Intelligence is growing these days and is attractinmg attention of scientists and managers from across the globe.

Referring to the article 7 types of Artificial Intelligence, in Forbes of June 2019 where the seven different types of AI classifications are briefly mentioned.

The basic classification of Artificial Intelligence is of two types based on the likeness to the human mind and the ability to analyse.

According to the classification of AI based on it's likeleiness to the human mind, Reactive, Limited Memory, Theory of Mind and Self Aware AI are the different classifications.

1. Reactive AI machines are

  • limited in their applications.
  • do not have memory based functionality
  • no ability to learn from previously gained experiences
  • can only respond to a limited set or combination of inputs
  • cannot improve their operations

An example is IBM's famous chess playing Super Computer Deep Blue.

2. Limited Memory AI is what we observe in chatbots, Personal Assistants like Amazon echo, Google Home, Microsoft Cortana and Apple Siri, all self-driving vehicles.

In addition to the capabilities of Reactive Machines, these AI machines can learn from historical data to make use in decision making. Image recognition that makes use of Machine Learning and Deep Learning is an example of this.

3. Theory of Mind AI is futuristic and exist only as a concept or work-in-progress

A Theory of mind AI will be able to better understand the entities by being able to discern the needs, emotions, beliefs and thought processes of the entities it is interacting with.  Theory of Mind AI tries to understand humans better.

4. Self Aware AI is akin to the human brain with all it's rationalising and emotional capabilities.

Though it may takes decades or centuries to fully realise and understand this type of AI, it can change humanity for the better or consign it for doom or disaster. The potential for self-preservation of these AI machines, can take over or spell the end of humanity, which can be a great threat to the world.

The other three types of AI are

Artificial Narrow Intelligence which we see in all our current applications with learning capabilities and ability to perform repetitive tasks autonomously using human like capabilities.

Artificial General Intelligence is futuristic and is the ability of machines to learn, perceive, understand and function like human beings. They develop competencies across multiple capabilities and domains with reduced learning time to carry out tasks efficiently and accurately.

Artificial Super Intelligence is the ultimate in AI development. Because of their multi faceted intelligence these machines will be better capable at doing all things better than humans because of their faster memory, data processing, analysis and decision making capabilities. These machines can also spell the doom of humanity, thus being a great risk.

How cn humanity make effective use of these different types of AI to help in growth of humanity and not its doom is a serious question facing human civilization now. Can we, if not control, at least co-exist with AGI or ASi to help humanity for the next millennia ?

Joy of giving .. 4 blood donations in 2020 ..

This year 2020 I donated blood once every three months, which is perfectly safe, what doctors recommend ..
I used to donate twice a year for many years, this time wanted to check .. gave in Feb, June, Sept and Dec.. no health problems at all, on the contrary have been healthy and active throughout. 🙏🙏🙂🙂 38 in total ..

Though I thought of reducing body weight from 88 kgs, to about 78 kgs, I have been unsuccessful in that .. at around 86 kgs now ..😥😥 During this Covid time, I could save at least twelve patients ..
Maybe I should attempt donating blood every 2 months ..

There is no substitute for blood. Blood lost needs to be replaced only with pure and fresh blood from another healthy body.
Blood donation is the most healthiest and harmless activity one can undertake ever .. Societal taboos, lack of self-confidence, poor level of medical awareness, poor health due to earlier health complications etc. can distract people from donating..

Having started donating from age 22, I can donate for another nine years till 65 years.

As per healthline.com, a 450 ml blood donation can save as much as four lives. ie. till 65, I can save almost another 100 lives.

3 tips at Home Covid Management to avoid Covid complications ..

Home Management system of a mild Covid condition.

Covid infection Management is an interesting area where we need to be well aware of what are the complications, what could go wrong and how it can be arrested by some simple home tips and home management.

As we know by now Covid treatment is not rocket science, it does not involve complicated diagnosis, high tech investigation methods and instruments and near fatal consequences. It is quite manageable if we are able to diagnose the symptoms at the right time and administer the right treatment. It is based on

  1. boosting one's immunity
  2. reducing one's viral load and
  3. breathing exercises

Getting into a ventilator and managing the treatment is needlessly expensive and puts everybody in the house into a great level of discomfort and gets everyone unnecessarily tensed.

Having gone through multiple videos on managing Covid, I found this video by Dr. Sandhya Ramanathan exciting and extremely beneficial. Click here for the video ..

The 3 important steps to take to avoid Covid infection and managing it effectively are give here. One needs to carry out the following three actions religiously.

1. boosting or priming the immune system

  • having good food, body to remain well hydrated with water
  • stay calm, minimum 8 hours of sleep daily
  • taking enough of colorful vegetables
  • if need be, taking immune boosting supplements of
    • Zinc,
    • Vitamin D
    • Vitamin C and
    • Turmeric

2. reducing one's viral load

  • social distancing, with masks and glasses
  • in case of fever, dry cough, running nose, sore throat, loss of smell and taste
    • rinsing the mouth - gargling twice daily with warm saline water
    • rinsing the nose - using saline nasal spray or saline nasal rinse twice daily
    • steam inhalation with warm water solution with vicks oitment

3. doing breathing exercises

These basic breathing exercises can be done twice or thrice a day to strengthen the lung.

  • blowing balloons in three stages continuously, many times. thereby building lung capacity
  • half-filling beaker with water, using a plastic straw blowing into the beaker raising bubbles continuously, upto three times with intermittent breaks

Carrying out these exercises regularly at home, can not only prime your immune system, strengthen your lungs and breathing ca

Having a pulse oximeter at home, taking the oxygen content in blood regularly, three to four times or more daily. If the oxygen concentration is between 95 and 100%, it is fine and healthy. If the oxygen concentration drops below 92%,. it needs intervention by health care professionals.

Countering Covid - home medication tips, What to do and what to avoid ..

When the deaths globally due to Covid has reached 7,50,000 (0.75 million) and infections aound 21 million, as of 13 August 2020, this writing points out the symptoms to look out for, the things to do and the things to avoid. I got this piece of advice from Dr. Danish Salim, from PNR Memorial hospital, Trivandrum, Kerala, India. I found it very sensible, useful and effective, that is why I thought of writing it down as a blog to be shared among people of the world.

As of 13 August 2020, of the 21 million infections globally from January 2020 (ie. about 0.27% of global population of 7800 million), approximately 14 million have recovered globally from this infection (66% recovery rate), 6.4 million are undergoing treatment and 64,000 in critical condition (app 1%), all the indications point out that infections are not going to abate any soon.

The Indian government has stopped admitting Covid patients in hospitals as the hospital facilities are getting overwhelmed and has requested them to undergo home isolation and home treatment if the situation is not severe. They have been asked to go to hospitals only if the situation is critical and serious.

Tips on home medication

1. Daily temp check, if it is > 101 deg Fahrenheit, take 600 mg Paracetamol every 6 hours.

For children it can be around 15 mg per kg of body weight.

2. If one experiences diarrhoea, take an Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) pack and mix it in a litre of water, take as many times, even once every 4 hours.

3. If one experiences dry cough, steam inhalation is advised, again every four hours or may be even more frequently.

When to go to hospital

1. if one has productive cough, ie. phlegm comes out

2. check heart pulse, if it is more than 120 beats per minute

3. while lying on bed, if the stomach rises and falls more than 30 times in a minute

4. if on pressing the skin on your fingers, on releasing if the blood does not flow back to the pressed area in less than 2 seconds

5. losing consciousness

6. if skin turns blue around the hands, legs, tongue, nose and ear

At home, what all are the activities to cary out - To-Do list

1. take 3-4 litres of water daily

2. eat balanced diet with 65% carbohydrates, 15% fat and 35% proteins

3. take fruits with enough of Vit C, papaya, orange, berries, guava

4. for Vitamin A - take enough of carrot, beetroot, milk, curd, eggs

5. for vitamin D - get enough of sunlight, before 11 AM and after 3 PM, have high fat fish like sardines

6. exercise daily or do yoga exercises daily for good blood circulation

7. practice meditation to bring down stress levels

8. have minimum of 8 hrs sleep so that the body produces enough of cytokines that improves body immunity to foreign agents entering the body

At home. - What to avoid

1. smoking cigarettes

2. drinking liquor (click here for a WHO doc on why you need to abstain from alchohol, especially during this period)

3. junk foods like burgers, and Maida based food like parotta etc

4. stressful talk and actions, as the Cortisol released lowers the body immunity

5. sweetened soft drinks

These tips and directions can help us tide over this Covid season with confidence and renewed energy, optimism and enthusiasm.

Good Luck everybody ..

FAQ on sound recording from a home studio

An FAQ on sound recording from a home studio..

Background music - Karaoke of all major songs are available on the Internet. On a google search, you can get it.

Hardware and software - I play the instrument background Karaoke music through my samsung A4 tab. I sing along in a closed, quiet room and record it using a free high quality Philip's sound recording android software app, single track, from Google playstore, on my Samsung M30S mobile phone.

Takes and re-takes - From my experience, it  takes on an average about 5-6 retakes before a recording is complete.. Yesterday I spent almost 2 hours with 7-8 retakes and still could not complete another Chemmeen song, Pennaale Pennaale ..

Throat clarity and hygiene - Your throat also should be clear. Drinking hotwater, hotwater gargling can help.

Recording room specs - A quiet sound insulated room with no fan noise, no ac noise, no disturbance, at the same time giving less trouble for other family members is very essential.

Avoid External Disturbance - Frequent planes flying overhead and shrieking mobile vegetable fruit vendors necessitate compulsory occasional breaks ..

Plan fixed recording time slot to improve effectiveness of process ..

Is One big solution possible for Covid ?

I was going though an engaging article by Prof. Gary Pisano of HBS in the May '20 issue of Harvard Business Review (click here for the paper) where he makes a point by saying that many small hygienic practices like wearing masks, hand washing, social distancing and innovations during this Covid time would actually be better than one large innovation, ie. the vaccine.

During the Spanish flu pandemic from Jan 1918 to December 1920, the world saw almost 50 - 70 million deaths. That was a time when medial care was sparse, limited and expensive, many of the medical innovations had not been developed. Even to this day, the world has not found ways to kill a virus - we are in square one as we were in January 1918. Aleander Fleming's anti-bacterial antibiotic, Penicillin G discovered three years after the Spanish flu virus subsided, in 1923 is no good or the world now. Should we wait for the big vaccine toi be discovered o start with many small innovations now itself ?

Can we deploy Lean Healthcare to solve this Covid pandemic ?

In any lean system, the first and most important point is to
1. identify value and map it
2. Ensuring a flowing setup and
3. Ensuing a system of Continuous Improvement.

1. Identify Value : We should think of having an inexpensive means of handling the Covid virus. The existing Eastern systems of medicine like Ayurveda, Homeo, Sidha, Unani etc should be explored to address this issue. These systems of medicine are effective in some cases and at the same time very cost effective. Every medical system of the world has evolved over centuries and has been effective in some part of the world, that explains the reason for its popularity in that area. There are some situations where each medical system has been effective.

These ancient medical systems have got their strong and weak points. In India presently a huge movement is on to see that people are administered doses of a popular Homeo medication by name Arsalb 30, 4 medicines taken twice daily for three days before the virus enters the body. This is to be repeated after a month. These medications are preventive in nature and not curative. It has to be administered before one catches the infection, it builds up antibodies in the human body that can prevent a recurrence.

2. Ensuring a flowing setup : The healthcare has to be in a flowing mode, ie. there should be no delay either in health care or health delivery, no queueing and batching, each patient is handled on a unit by unit basis.

3. System of Continuous Improvement : The Japanese Toyota system hinges on their Kaizen (Continuous Improvement) setup, which relies on incremental innovation. Small definite, quantifiable improvements over time leads to large cost-effective, measurable, lasting innovations. Even if the Covid vaccine does not become a reality in the next 12 months or is ineffective to different strains of Covid 19, following the small innovations religiously like effective hand washing, wearing masks and social distancing will be the only effective solution in the long run.

The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 lasted for thee years and even to this day, no effective solution to attack a virus has been developed by modern western medicine, after exactly 100 years. Can we expect a similar repeat of the same this time too ?

Will finally hand washing, social distancing and mask wearing be a social practice for the next many years ?

The only Marine Cemetery of the world ..

Uru ..
Beypore town in Calicut is famous from time immemorial, almost 2000 years back, for the boats that were built there which sailed the seas of the world - the Uru .. An Uru is a wooden dhow, mainly made of Malabar teak, probably the biggest handicraft in the world.

To add to the glory of Beypore, the world's first and only marine cemetery has been built on Beypore beach in 2019.

What is a marine cemetery ?

The Marine Cemetery is dedicated to marine and riverine species which are endangered due to plastic waste, water pollution, climate change, and overexploitation.

Aerial view of the cemetery
The monument has nine markers, each dedicated to an endangered marine and riverine species, built with plastic bottles encased in gravestone-shaped iron frames.

The cemetery is jutting into the Arabian sea and is built on a rock foundation, probably to make sure these iron frames will stand for generations to come and will withstand heavy ocean waves and sea winds.

Eight of these markers are 4 feet (1.2 m) in height, and are dedicated to the
1. seahorse
The epitaph
2. parrotfish
3. leatherback sea turtles
4. eagle rays
5. sawfish
6. dugong
7. zebra shark and
8. hammerhead shark

One of the markers is 6 feet (1.8 m) in height, and is dedicated to the endangered native freshwater fish species
9. Miss Kerala

The monument is an awareness initiative.

In November 2019, a team of about 80 volunteers cleaned up Beypore beach, and collected over 800 kg (1,800 lb) of plastic waste which they handed over to Kozhikode Municipal Corporation for recycling.

2,000 plastic bottles were left behind which were later used for building the monument.

The monument was initiated by Jellyfish Watersports in collaboration with the Beypore Port administration, the authorities of Kozhikode district, and under the Clean Beach Mission of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

Climate change activist Aakash Ranison and his team built the structure.

It was opened on 4 December 2019, the World Wildlife Conservation Day.

Cotabato Prison, Philippines, one of world's toughest prisons..

The other day I was going through a documentary from Free Documentary on the Internet. I have never closely understood how prisons work or what goes through the prisoner's minds.

This is the story of Cotabato prison in Philippines. In a space of 2 buildings designed to accommodate just 600 prisoners, these are not hard core convicted ones, they are standing trial for crime, yet to be punished, about 1600 prisoners cram.

Cotabato prison, Philippines, Free Documentary

In any prison we are likely to find many innocents too who get caught in the cross fire and get arrested by the Police just on suspicion. If we take about 30% are of that category and the rest are yet to be charged, without understanding the motive, the injustice being meted out tio these people is indeed beyond words.

The sad part is to understand that almost all of them are in their thirties or forties,, barley few in their fifties or more. The best productive part of their lives is being spent in these horrible conditions.

My first experience of prison life happened just once when as a young student in the Govt. College of Engineering, Trivandrum, from the church, as a youngster group during Christmas time, we got permission to visit the Poojapura jail, on the outskirts of Trivandrum city, where we went to spread the cheer of New year during the New Year of 1985. A rare experience, which most of my colleagues and friends have never had and would never wish to. Kerala prisons do not have the issue of overcrowding. Imagine having to share the prison room with 6 - 8 other criminals or suspects ..

It was Kiran Bedi, IPS, now Governor of Pondicherry who is credited with bringing great jail rreorms or changes in the country's top and notorious Tihar jail in Delhi around the nineties. It was remarkable and commendable. She was awarde the Magsaysay prize for that.

Overcrowding at prisons .. Aljazeera
Most of the freedom fighters during the Indian freedom struggle have been jailed and the most important of it I would say is Jawaharlala Nehru who unfortunately was jailed for almost ten years. But not losing hope, Nehru went into writing inside the prison and some of this best writings have come out of his prison stay, like Letters to a Daughter, Discovery of India and so on.

Being jailed for protesting against injustice meted out to the people in the name of racism, for just protesting and for no fault , even for upto 29 years, like in the case of Nelson mandela is the other sad part of jail stay.

Besides losing hope, the psychological strain on the human mind is very shocking,. Drug related crime, I find, is responsible for maximum prison sentences around the world. Impoverished upbringing without love and care is responsible for making many of the convicts to turn to hard-core criminals.

Creatively using the inmates and their energy within the prison to produce creative things is a creative way of using the time of the prison inmates. The revenue from the work is returned to the inmates at the time of their finishing their prison sentences. Poojapura jail inmates in Trivandrum make chappathies and sell to the city hotels, they also make Covid PPE in the jail and sell the medical shops and hiospitals across the state.

Kiran Bedi, 1994, Magsaysay award
The Psychological distress these prisoners bear is very heart breaking. Due to the gravity of the crime they have committed, it is not safe for society to allow them to get back to mainstream soon enough, they are a constant threat to society.

In my opinion, political prisoners should be treated differently from other prisoners.

Lets hope in the coming days we get to respect the human rights and offer them to prisoners in prison, even though they have infringed upon the human rights of someone else that has brought them to jail.

Prison reforms are needed.

Were we over-indulgent and over-exploiting world resources ?

Why did a virus suddenly hit the world from the beginning of this year , 2020 ?

Even though we knew that the resources and life on planet earth were limited, in our ever increasing appetite to exploit mineral, oil and energy resources, we scoured all around the planet and identified pockets of concentration of critical and vital raw materials.

The innovation in processes and materials brought in more exotic materials to the limelight and to maximise the utilisation of these innovative materials or combination of materials, we over exploited the natural resources even more.

With the ever increasing threat of global population staring at our face, from 6 billion at the turn of the century to 10 billion by 2050, we are facing the daunting task of having more mouths to feed. Can we aim to feed all these mouths at the pace at which we are growing now ?

Was the Covid outbreak but a natural reaction to the over stress Mother Earth was experiencing since 2010, when the population grew to 7 billion at the turn of that decade and expected to touch 7.8 billion by end of 2020 ?

This planet earth where we co-exist with all other flora and fauna was exploited beyond it's capabilities. This led to a breakdown in the services offered.

An overtly materialistic society which exploited natural resources beyond the capability of restoration by nature led to imbalances and cracks in the ecosystem. This would have led to the progression of certain ecological processes that led to the disturbance of the ecological balance.

Here we are 6 months into the progression of the virus, with no end in sight. It may go into 2021 or into 2022, but the system is really going for a change.

The world will not be the same ever again.

Temika Mallory's fiery speech to America ..

What a fiery young lady !!

Temika Mallory, the activist against racism
is very much true .. The whites looted and killed native Americans, the original owners of North America, from 400 years back, reducing them from 75 million to barely less than 5 million now..

The descendants of the black people brought in as slaves from Africa, exploited and used for centuries, have all right to object against the treatment meted out to them.

The opportunities for the blacks are grabbed by the whites and other ignorant, helpless immigrant communities, pushing the blacks to perpetual penury, poverty and lower academic achievements, denying them the right to climb higher in the social ladder.

Social inclusion in all walks of life is the only solution, including providing more educational opportunities to the blacks.

Let's hope the whites take the lead and hold the blacks and native Americans by the hand and jointly maŕch forward as brothers to a bright future for that country..👍👌

Let human justice prevail, not white justice..

Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia ..

*Uyuni Salt Flat (Salar de Uyuni)* Salt pan in Bolivia

Description : Salar de Uyuni, amid the Andes in southwest Bolivia, South America, is the world’s largest salt flat.

It’s the legacy of a prehistoric lake, 46,000 years old, that went dry, leaving behind a desertlike, nearly 11,000 sq.-km. landscape of bright-white salt ( *3 times area of Goa* ), rock formations and cacti-studded islands.

A few metres depth of salt crust covers 130 metres deep salt brine underneath which houses 50-70% of the world's Lithium reserves.

Its otherworldly expanse can be observed from central Incahuasi Island. Though wildlife is rare in this unique ecosystem, it harbors many pink flamingos.

Just after rains, a small layer of dead calm water over this 46,000 years old salt plains, makes it the world's largest mirror, 129 kms across.

While a Tour de France champion cyclist would cross this 130km wide salt flats in under 4 hours, an average cyclist can take anywhere from 12 - 18 hours to cross it.

1900 to 2020 in the global war perspective ..

(From the Internet, I found this analysis exciting..,)

For a small amount of perspective at this moment, imagine you were born in 1900.

When you are 14, World War I starts, and ends on your 18th birthday with 22 million people killed. Later in the year, a Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs until you are 20. Fifty million people die from it in those two years. Yes, 50 million.

When you're 29, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, global GDP drops 27%.

That runs until you are 33. The country nearly collapses along with the world economy.

When you turn 39, World War II starts. You aren’t even over the hill yet.  When you're 41, the United States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39th and 45th birthday, 75 million people perish in the war and the Holocaust kills six million.

At 52, the Korean War starts and five million perish.

At 64 the Vietnam War begins, and it doesn’t end for many years. Four million people die in that conflict.

Approaching your 62nd birthday you have the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tipping point in the Cold War. Life on our planet, as we know it, could well have ended. Great leaders prevented that from happening.

As you turn 75, the Vietnam War finally ends.

Think of everyone on the planet born in 1900. How do you survive all of that?

A kid in 1985 didn’t think their 85 year old grandparent understood how hard school was. Yet those grandparents (and now great grandparents) survived through everything listed above.

Perspective is an amazing art. Let’s try and keep things in perspective. Let’s be smart, help each other out, and we will get through all of this.” In the history of the world, there has never been a storm that lasted. This too, shall pass.....
----------------

Interesting, 👍👍 however out of interest and curiosity, added these events post 1990 to the perspective .. (if incomplete, pl point out .. ) ..

1. '90 Gulf war which saw 383 US deaths and over 100,000 Iraqi deaths

2. WTC bombing, NY '93, app. 3000 US citizens dead

3. Afghan war '01, 5500 US deaths and 92,000 Afghan deaths and still counting

4. Iraq war '03, 4430 US deaths and 2,80 000 Iraqi deaths ... 😥😥😥😥

Sadly, US has been involved in almost all global combats over the past 70 years since WW2.

The dropping of 2 atom bombs (Little boy and Fat man over Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively) killed between 1,30,000 and 2,30,000 civilians in the 2 Japanese cities.

The 1947 India Pakistan partition led to another 200,000 to 2 million perishing in both countries.  - upper limit ..

The '80 - '88 Iran Iraq war resulted in 500,000 to a million deaths in both sides , with no victor, no loser, no war reparations,  no border changes , only an economic loss of a trillion dollars.. 😳😳

While 1.7 billion (1,700,000,000) people inhabited the earth in 1900, now it is about 7.8 billion  (7,800,000,000), an increase of 6,100,000,000 (6.1 billion) people, global population growing at a compounded rate of 1.25% annually .. 🙂🙂

Airlines revival plans - knotty issues ??

Airlines around the world are facing threat of closure, being grounded for more than three months now, unless backed by countries.

Airlines are going to find the issue of social distancing limit the passengers accommodated in a flight (leaving alternate seats vacant in a row) to 50-67 % of the earlier numbers.

Also the issue of recirculation and intake of the virus contaminated air (if even one asymptomatic covid patient enters the flight) during the course of the flight, increases the risk of contracting the Corona virus.

The increased maintenance cost to make the grounded planes airworthy and secure is another headache for the airlines.

Do you foresee a crash in global commercial passenger airlines market  operating since 1950, if planes dont get to the air by June at least ?

Can innovative methods be proposed to save the airline industry from going bankrupt to :

1. limit the passenger Corona infection threat
2. improve revenue for airlines by providing more seats and
3. low cost ways to have regular maintenance to improve airworthiness of grounded aeroplanes.

How can global airlines overcome these three major problems in the coming  days ??

Why is US in a hurry to reopen its economy ?

Why US wants to reopen the country soon ?

1. US is totally dependent on its materialistic economy ..If the economy takes a break, US falters and fumbles, unemployment rises, loan repayments fail, could disturb the social peace and equilibrium.. very scary..

2. If US allows another country to overtake and take economic and knowledge leadership of the world, US knows it will be wiped out. Preventing such an outcome by any means, even at cost of lives of its own people, is top priority for US.

3. Replacement of US dollar by the Chinese Yuan as the global currency is the end of the road for US. It has to stop this by any means.

4. If US has to repay the public debt of $20 trillion it has loaned from the world by printing notes (it is easier to borrow than tax the citizens), it will wipe out US from global map for ever.

Please click here to know how much each country is indebted..

Maintaining financial leadership of the world by hook or crook is top priority for US now. That explains why US political leadership is extremely disturbed with the Covid virus..

How to improve your body immunity ..

Dr. Eapen Koshy, FRCS
Great talk by Dr. Eapen Koshy MBBS, MS (CMC Vellore), FRCS ..

The most important threat mankind faces now is lower body immunity. People are falling o like chicken acrposs the wold, especially in US an EEurope. It is not that these countries have very low health standards. These are great counties that have a history of a couple of centuries in leading allopathic western medicine. Why have they terribly failed in this instance ?

Dr. Ninan Koshy firmly believes after his 30 years plus experience in treating patients across the world, it is lack of immunity. Immunity is the natual ability of our body to fight off attacks by pathogens on our body.

How to raise our body immunity to counter any viral attack, present and into the future ..

1. Avoid sugar and sugary food and drinks
2. Avoid animal milk
3. Maintain circadian rhythm of life - go to sleep early and get up early
4. Have intermittent fasting, at least once a week
5. Have an alkaline diet of vegetables, fruits, nuts etc ..
6. Have the super food Spirulina in your diet ..
7. Have fresh intake of ginger, lemon, garlic and turmeric in your diet for raising your body immunity
8. Do not overcook food

George..

When will this Covid pandemic end ?

The real pandemic starts the day lockdown ends.

The coronavirus is a crisis of math.

The coronavirus is an easy problem to solve…if we understood exponentials.

Unfortunately, the human mind is incapable of grasping exponentials. We cannot intuitively perceive how a small number can grow so large in such a small amount of time.

An Indian parable is relevant at this point.
A king wanted to reward the inventor of chess and asked him to name his prize. “I want you to fill up the entire chess board with wheat. One grain of wheat on the first square, 2 grains on the next square, double that on the next square for 4 grains, 8, 16, 32 and thus fill up the entire chess board,“ said the inventor.

At first, the king was offended, and thought his paltry request was a joke, but the inventor of chess was serious. So, the king told his servants to fill up the chess board. The servants came back and told the king that it couldn’t be done. They had used up the entire wheat stock of the kingdom. There was no more left to continue to fill the chess board. Just the last square alone on the board would require 9 trillion grains of wheat.
Just like the king in this story, every world leader has been fooled by a small number of coronavirus cases and the power of exponential growth.

We are accusing China for hiding the exact number of cases. But the important aspect is that 80,000 cases in two months should have been enough for us to wake up to the scary reality of this exponential growth. Despite seeing the data, the world leaders did nothing.

Some basic math around the virus:

Starting from the first locally transmitted case in the US on February 26, 15 cases have grown to ~460,000 cases (April 9th) in only 6 weeks, in spite of lockdown measures being taken all over the country. On April 8, there were 31,000 new cases. Yesterday, there were 34,000 more new cases. And today, there will be even more.

There is no current indicator that the virus’s exponential growth will stop. Our current lockdown measures have slowed the rate of this exponential growth. But due to the nature of exponents, decreasing the rate of exponential growth still leaves you growing exponentially, and only marginally slower.

Exponential growth can only stop if there are no more people left for the virus to infect in its environment.

There is a ~1% mortality rate for the virus in the best circumstances. Assuming our health care system can handle the influx of new cases (flatten the curve), if every US citizen got coronavirus, ~3 million people would die.

Stopping exponential growth without infecting the full population requires cutting off the supply of healthy individuals that can be infected.

The incubation period of the virus is ~14 days. If everyone is in complete isolation for 4–6 weeks, the virus will disappear. Complete isolation means no going out for any reason at all. No walks, no groceries, no “essential” businesses. This has been proven successful in China.

This is effective because those within a household where no one is infected will have no means of contracting the virus without outside contact. For an individual who may have the virus, they will only be able to pass it to those quarantined with them, with 4–6 weeks as enough time for the virus to pass through the whole household. Those who end up at the hospital would only return to their homes once they are cleared of the virus.

We have two choices:

Everyone in the world gets the virus, so that it can no longer spread. The body count would be horrific.

The whole world synchronously goes into a complete lockdown for 4–6 weeks. The effects on the global economy would be horrific.

Every nation is eagerly awaiting to lift its lockdown as soon as there are fewer cases. But when 15 cases become 460,000 in 6 weeks, how is it ok to lift a lockdown when we are down to, say, “only 100 new cases” in a given day? Once again, our human mind is incapable of thinking in exponentials. We will not have learned from history — a history that occurred just two months ago.

The real pandemic will start the day we start lifting the lockdown.

Every country or state has announced a date at which lockdown will be lifted. They should instead declare that they will lift the lockdown the day the number of new cases has been zero for the past two weeks. Period.
We are setting ourselves up for a cycle of partial lockdown for weeks, followed by a lift, then a lock down again when the spread picks up — over and over again, for the better part of the year, at best. In the process, we will lose millions of lives, as well as our economies.

If we take a hit of some percentage loss in the world GDP by locking down the entire world synchronously, we could save millions of lives. Or we do nothing and millions get killed with a loss in GDP anyway.

The reality is that we will lose lives as well as the economy — just because we didn’t bother to understand the math.

We have a choice to make: do we want to throw money at the problem, or throw bodies at the problem?

Where did we go wrong ,??

*Wonderful write up by Vivienne in Spain*

The earth whispered but you did not hear.

The earth spoke but you did not listen

The earth screamed but you turned her off.

And so I was born...I was not born to punish you...I was born to awaken you...

The earth cried out for help...Massive flooding..But you didn't listen.

Burning fires. But you didn't listen.

Strong hurricanes. But you didn't listen.

Terrifying Tornadoes. But you didn't listen.

You still don't listen to the earth when.

Ocean animals are dying due to pollutants in the waters.

Glaciers melting at an alarming rate.

Severe drought...You didn't listen to how much negativity the earth is receiving.

Non-stop wars.

Non-stop greed.

You just kept going on with your life..

No matter how much hate there was..

No matter how many killings daily..

It was more important to get that latest iPhone than worry about what the earth was trying to tell you..

But now I am here.

And I've made the world stop in its tracks.

I've made YOU finally listen.

I've made you take refuge.

I've made you stop thinking about materialistic things..

Now you are like the earth...

You are only worried about YOUR survival.

How does that feel ?

I give you fever.. as the fires burn on earth.

I give you respiratory issues.. as pollution filled  the earth’s air.

I give you weakness as the earth weakens every day.

I took away your comforts..

Your outings.

The things you would use to forget about the planet and its pain.

And I made the world stop..

And now...

China has better air quality...Skys are clear blue because factories are not spewing pollution unto the earth's air.

The water in Venice is clean and Because the gondola boats that pollute the water are not being used.

YOU are having to take time to reflect on what is important in your life.

Again I am not here to punish you.. I am here to Awaken you..

*When all this is over and I am gone... Please remember these moments..*

Listen to the earth.

Listen to your soul.

Stop Polluting the earth.

Stop Fighting amongst each other.

Stop caring about materialistic things.

And start loving your neighbours.

Start caring about the earth and all its creatures.

Start believing in a Creator.

Because next time I may come back even stronger...

Signed

Yours faithfully

Online Class discussion on Agri Supply Chains ..

Yesterday had a 60 minutes case discussion last night using a web collaboration tool. The case discussion  did not happen inside the classroom. It was a country wide classroom case discussion. The participants spanned across the country from Meghalaya to Maharashtra and Punjab to Kerala.

The participants were my students spread across India from Meghalaya to Mumbai, Delhi to Truvandrum on the, Agricultural supply chain challenges across the country and beyond,  during these Covid times..

The discussions started on a sober note at 8 pm. We had a bit of pandemonium in between with about 23 students attending the discussion. The main purpose of the discussion was to sensitize the student community on the challenges faced by the agricultural supply chains across the country during these Covid times ..

While some students were of the view that the all important agri supply chains in the country were operating without any stresses, others were of the view that there were challenges. The supplies were actually depleting the safety stocks to supply to organized retail chains like Reliance Fresh (Ambani), Star bazar (Tatas) and More supermarkets (Birlas) and others.

Only these stores are open these days helping the common man. Mom and pop corner stores, frequently run out of stock as replenishments are not reliable because of the transportation lock down. Organized retail accounts for just 10% of India's total retail trade of $60 billion.

In Andhra, the govt has ensured that there are shops selling provisions and vegetables every 2 km distance across the state.

In North East which has not yet seen a Corona death, situation is more relaxed, though they are taking precautions, practicing social distancing and self quarantine for foreign travelers..

Also in remote Jharkhand or Assam, the situation is same, tense yet relaxed. In Assam, except for rice, dal and aloo, other estables are really difficult to procure and stock. Police are trying their level best to avoid prople crowding at public places, malls, supermarkets etc ..

Really, this is a great case study in effective leadership.  Kerala public never thought Pinarayi would emerge as a good leader even surpassing Modi in arranging fast  effective responses, motivating lakhs of volunteers across the state irrespective of party affiliations.. 👍👍👍

The story of Haier and my experience ..

When I was doing my engineering,  Haier was just waiting to happen ..👍 excellent 45 min youtube video story of Haier.. 👍👍

https://youtu.be/WK7mxBy1fNw

Every Bschool student should watch this video. How the firm belief to give ONLY the best product to the customer, whatever it may cost, transformed a company to be the world's largest white goods manufacturer. The story of QingDao Refrigerator company in China.

The CEO of Haier Zhang Ruimin, the person responsible for bringing the quality revolution in Haier, asking the employees of Qingdao refrigerator company who built 76 faulty refrigerators to destroy them in 1984 made big news. The cost of a refrigerator then was two yeas pay of an employee. Within 3 years by 1987, it was a sought after refrigerator company of the world. When GE wanted to buy it in the early nineties, Haier snubbed them by refusing a buyout.

Later in 2014 when GE Home appliances merger with Electolux, did not materialise, GE turned to Haier in 2016, asking them to takeover GE Home appliances. Why, GE did not find it worthwhile continuing to be in the home appliances division, because aircraft turbines, medical equipment and finance were high in GE's radar than the ordinary refrigerator and washing machines white goods business.  The deal was for $5.6 billion. The competition from Korean companies was great, LG and Samsung.

The Rendenhai model where the company was divided into 60,000 Rendenhai, each trying to work on it's own entrepreneurship model, was changed by Kevin Nolan, the new CEO from GE, who divided the company into different businesses. After winning lot of laurels for bringing in innovation, the Internet of Things (IoT) fridge, connected with the other elements of the domestic ecosystem, was a big change for Haier, which in 2019 generated a revenue of Yuan 200 billion ($28.2 billion).

Recently due to the heavy advertising Haier is doing in India, I bought a Haier top loading washing machine. This machine they claimed is assisted by AI, fuzzy logic. True to the word, compared to the earlier Godrej top loading automatic washing machine, this washing machine uses just half the water, washes neat, with effective rinse cycles and what not .. With Godrej to reduce the water consumption, we used to interrupt the cycle and carry out manual interventions.

Just simple application of fuzzy logic which tells what is the washing time at the beginning of the wash cycle, the different washing movements etc is decided by the machine.

I am impressed how the Qingdao refrigerator company in 1980s has now transormed to become Haier with GE Household Appliances under it's wing, giving a run for the money for Korean competitors, LG and Samsung.  ..

Virtual Open Forum meeting on Online Learning platforms at Alliance University, Bangalore, India

Today we had the first virtual meeting of the Open Forum in Alliance University in Bangalore because of the Corona virus lockdown across the country of India and the world. Even though the faculty could have stayed away, they showed great enthusiasm, understanding and concern for a very pressing issue facing the student community of the world. They also understood that it was a great opportunity to make, break or sustain traditional educational delivery models over modern high technology alternatives. .

About 7 faculty members attended the session from Bangalore from 3.30 PM for an hour on 31 March 2020..

The topic was on Sharing the rich lessons from the Online Courses undertaken in Alliance University.

Two of the faculty members shared their personal experiences. Dr. Shobana Padmanabhan from the College of Engineering and Design spoke of her experience of using ZOOM for teaching her students in Information Technology at the Engineering College.

Internet speeds and connectivity for people from outside Bangalore was a major cause of concern for the students. The students were okay with 2 hours of online classes but not more. Constant feedback from students helped Dr. Shobana to tailor her delivery mode to suit their needs.

Dr. George spoke of how his MOOC style online teaching has been benefiting students - 2-3 hours of instruction followed by daily quizzes. Dr. George first tried out Youtube Studio, then went to private Youtube videos which were recorded and distributed to students for learning, followed by quizzes.

This approach was cumbersome and on feedback Dr. George changed to ZOOM web conferencing software available in public domain for interacting with sem 2 students on Supply chain management, which has been interesting and convenient. Though it is not possible to have recordings like in YouTube sessions. Dr. George feels the daily quizzes were the reinforcing factor which helped in better retention by students.

Prof. Sajan and Prof. Sukanya, our tech protagonists in the discussion, were discussing on means and ways by which the online meetings could be made more effective. Their suggestions and proposals for and against both Coursera and MS Teams were interesting and provided great insight into the administration and delivery of these online courses.

The meeting was attended by 7 members and the interactions were very fruitful. We intend to have more virtual sessions on interesting topics in the Open Forum during this Corona virus lockdown period in the country.

The ZOOM software may or may not be replaced by MS Teams software which has been procured by Uty some time back for online learning. There is a demo tomorrow after which it will be decided to go for it or not.

The most dominating aspect of the discussion was the conviction among the experienced and learned faculty, of the inevitability and utility of high-quality online learning solutions in the future education canvas of the world..

Italian lesson for the world on Corona virus ..

Italians now repent not having followed precautions at the beginning of this pandemic .. This is a letter I got from my friends, it was so moving and informative, I thought it should reach more people.

Self-quarantining and social distancing are the two major steps we Indians can take now to prevent a catastrophe hitting us ..

=======================================================

A letter from Italy,

If only Italians had taken the advice seriously ..
Peace for all,
We live in Italy - Milan,

I'm going to share with you and explain to you, "How is life here in Milan" during these difficult days and how do I think you should learn from the mistakes and their consequences that we live here.

We are currently in quarantine.  We don't take to the streets, the police are in constant motion and arrest anyone outside his home.

Everything is closed!  ... business, malls, stores, all streets without movement.

Feeling of the end of the world !!
Italy, the country of living life, is transformed from one moment to the next as if it were a dark country of war. It is a fact that I never thought I would ever live!

People are confused, sad, anxious and helpless, and often do not understand how this reality was imposed on them and when this whole nightmare will end.

The big mistake was that at the start of the first hit people continued to lead their lives as usual and took to the streets for work, entertainment and feeling like a vacation period, so gatherings with friends and banquets abound.

Everyone was wrong and so were you!
I beg you, be careful, this is neither a laugh nor a joke. Protect your loved ones, your parents, and your grandparents!  The disease is dangerous for them.

Social distancing, basic norms ..
About 200 people die here every day, not because medicine in Milan is not good (it's one of the best in the world), but rather because there are no places for everyone!

Doctors choose who will die!  This is only because of the silliness of the citizens at the beginning, who decided to continue their lives as usual, regardless of the new situation!

Please, learn from the mistakes, we are a small country that could end up with a great tragedy. Listen well now ,,, 🙏

1. Don't go out into crowded places
      2. Try not to eat in public places.
3. Stay longer at home during this time!
      4. Listen to the Ministry of Health guidelines (don't play it!).
5. Talk about a meter away from each person, do not come close, do not cuddle or accept.
      6. Get a complementary and preventive treatment and learn from others' mistakes.
7. We recommend that you take vitamin C to boost your immune system.
Helping professionals prevent the spread of the epidemic ...

In Italy, the entire country is isolated, meaning 60 million people in quarantine !!

This would have been prevented if people had heard the instructions from the beginning. Take care of yourself and the life of the one you love ❤❤
